Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) is most typically thought of as an immune-stimulating berry and is crafted into all sorts of syrups, baked goods, etc. However, the Elderflower doesn't get the recognition it deserves! Elderflower is also used to craft edible delights (think fritters, cordials, and more!), but is a gentler-acting part of the plant, highly effective for many of the same uses. Elderberries are used in fighting viruses, sinus and bronchial infections and fevers. Traditionaluses don't end there though- due to anti-inflammatory compounds, the blooms of Elder can be a great help to those suffering from pain and swelling of the joints and, if taken before the pollens start to fly, can reduce the suffering of seasonal allergies because of its anti-histaminic actions.Studies are also starting to show promise for helping maintain blood sugar and may prove useful in Type II diabetes.
